Dan began his working career as a Union Ironworker in 1986. Due to injury, after a sixteen-year career he was forced to find a different line of work. Dan went back to school earning his Bachelor of Science from Illinois State University in 2006 with a major in occupational safety and a minor in environmental health. He did his internship with the Peoria, IL OSHA office, and then worked one year with a local electrical contractor before spending the next seven with the Illinois On-site Safety & Health Consultation Program as a safety consultant.

After seven years with the program Dan left to go into the insurance field focusing on loss control and risk management for Insurance Company of the West (ICW,) at one time covering seven states throughout the Midwest. This gave Dan a tremendous amount of exposure to multiple industries such as various manufacturing, warehousing, construction, refuse, trucking and agriculture. Dan left ICW in 2024 and returned to the Illinois On-site Consultation Program in an industrial hygienist role where he performs health visits including air sampling, noise monitoring, health program reviews and is active in the Safety and Health Achievement and Recognition Program (SHARP) for the On-Site Program.

Dan holds certificates in: OSHA 10-, & 30-hour construction safety & health, scaffold erector/assembler and user lead abatement specialist, hazmat worker and ASP designation.

Outside work Dan enjoys the outdoors with activities such as boating, hunting and fishing and is a hobbyist woodworker.

What:
Dan will present very valuable information about the Illinois Department of Labor On-Site safety & health Consultation program. How the program works and what an employer can expect during a visit.  The responsibilities of the IL On-Site program and the employer participating in a visit will be discussed.  Dan will also provide information on the (SHARP) (safety and health recognition program) criteria.

When: Friday May 15, 2026 at 11:00am Central Time (Please log in at least 5 minutes early and mute your microphone to reduce distractions) What: Heat Stress – Including information on OSHA’s proposed standard and information that our speaker learned from participating in the Small Business Regulatory Enforcement Fairness Act (SBREFA) Panel for the proposed Heat Stress Standard.  Jim provided multiple comments and testimony during the informal hearings.

After attending the event attendees will be able to:

1. Identify heat illnesses and other negative effects and impacts from heat
2. Identify the more common health conditions that are impacted by heat
3. Differentiate between the various options for measuring/ monitoring heat, including strengths and limitations of each option
4. Identify which temperature/heat thresholds/levels (i.e. NIOSH REL) may work best for their situation
5. Identify tasks and conditions that are at higher risk for a heat related illness.
6. Determine best options for monitoring the tasks and items to consider for each option
7. Develop a basic heat injury and illness prevention plan
8. Identify preventative measures and controls including acclimation, PPE, rest breaks, access to water, etc.
9. Identify emergency response needs within their respective workplaces
10. Determine training needs regarding heat injury and illness

Who: Jim Nelson, ASSP Region V RVP

Jim earned his BS in Chemistry from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1992. He has worked in the EHS field for over 30 years, earning his CSP in 2003. Jim has worked in variety of industries including chemical, foundry, cement and manufacturing. He is currently the Environmental Health and Safety Manager for LBT, Inc., a tank trailer manufacturer.  Jim has been a member of AIHA for nearly 30 years and ASSP for 25 years.  In 2023 Jim was part of the small business review process and was a Small Entity Representative during the SBREFA Panel for the proposed Heat Illness and Injury Prevention standard.  He co-wrote the Truck Trailer Manufacturers Association comments on the proposed standard as well as his company’s response. In 2025 he testified during the OSHA’s informal hearings for the proposed HIIP Rule. He currently is serving as the Region V Vice President and Deputy Vice Chair for CORA. Jim has served as the Area 2 Director for Region V, Deputy Regional Vice President and various roles in the Great Plains Chapter including President.
