SAFETY COORDINATOR

Location: Morton, IL
Description: Otto Baum Company is a leading subcontractor in central Illinois with concrete, civil, masonry and restoration operations. The Safety Coordinator will be responsible for helping deliver effective training programs, perform job-site inspections, performing thorough accident/incident investigations, and effectively communicating the program goals to all employees. This position reports to the Director of Safety and Risk Management.
Salary: 60,000 (starting – BOE)
Key Responsibilities:
- The ability to implement program elements and safe operating procedures
- The knowledge of environmental requirements and the ability to implement systems which meet or exceed compliance
- Knowledge of scaffolding, including swing stage), mast climbers, trenching/excavation, MEWP’s (aerial lifts)
- The ability to plan and employ preventative measures to reduce the risks of exposure to hazards
- The ability to determine the cause of an incident, and to initiate and implement corrective action to prevent reoccurrence
- The knowledge of hygiene, ergonomics, and HAZCOM, and the ability to act as required for the preservation of health and the prevention of disease
- The ability to plan and organize construction/safety activities
- The use and application of technology as well as the evaluation and integration of new technologies as they apply to role
- The skill to develop and deliver effective safety training programs
- The ability to form and develop relationships at all levels of the organization
- Develop a zero injury safety culture on each project
- Conduct daily, weekly, random documented jobsite safety inspections
- Assist supervisors with daily safety job briefings and weekly toolbox talks.
- Identify project trends and execute proactive safety initiatives to eliminate incidents
- Reporting all incidents in an effective and timely manner
Other:
- Proficient in Microsoft Office: Word, Excel & Power Point
- Ability to Communicate effectively at all levels of the organization (Verbal & Written)
- Ability to Organize and Prioritize work with little oversight
- Must be “Hands On”, walk projects daily and identify issues as well as successes
Competencies:
Successful candidate must be disciplined and well-organized with a strong bias towards timely, detailed performance against deadlines.
Physical Demands:
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Able to work at heights, able to climb ladders, access/inspect scaffolding, and roof areas.
The noise level is usually moderate to loud.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
This is a full-time position. This position may require long hours and occasional weekend work (when warranted).
Travel:
The role requires travel (Greater Chicagoland, Western Indiana, Eastern Iowa, and all of central Illinois). Out of town / overnight travel not expected.
Education and Experience:
- years of safety experience or combination of education/multiple years’ experience in building construction, with a working knowledge of safety/environment principles and techniques. Construction industry field experience required.
OSHA 30 hour construction accreditation
OSHA 500 Outreach trainer a plus
Fork-truck trainer a plus
Respirator fit testing a plus
Computer skills with familiarity with Microsoft Office.
Additional Eligibility Requirements:
Must possess or be able to obtain a valid and appropriate state driver’s license prior to employment.
Must be able to pass pre-employment drug screen.
