When: Friday May 15, 2026 at 11:00am Central Time (Please log in at least 5 minutes early and mute your microphone to reduce distractions) What: Heat Stress – Including information on OSHA’s proposed standard and information that our speaker learned from participating in the Small Business Regulatory Enforcement Fairness Act (SBREFA) Panel for the proposed Heat Stress Standard. Jim provided multiple comments and testimony during the informal hearings.
Learning Objective for the Heat Stress presentation
After attending the event attendees will be able to:
- Identify heat illnesses and other negative effects and impacts from heat
- Identify the more common health conditions that are impacted by heat
- Differentiate between the various options for measuring/ monitoring heat, including strengths and limitations of each option
- Identify which temperature/heat thresholds/levels (i.e. NIOSH REL) may work best for their situation
- Identify tasks and conditions that are at higher risk for a heat related illness.
- Determine best options for monitoring the tasks and items to consider for each option
- Develop a basic heat injury and illness prevention plan
- Identify preventative measures and controls including acclimation, PPE, rest breaks, access to water, etc.
- Identify emergency response needs within their respective workplaces
- Determine training needs regarding heat injury and illness
Who: Jim Nelson, ASSP Region V RVP
Jim earned his BS in Chemistry from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1992. He has worked in the EHS field for over 30 years, earning his CSP in 2003. Jim has worked in variety of industries including chemical, foundry, cement and manufacturing. He is currently the Environmental Health and Safety Manager for LBT, Inc., a tank trailer manufacturer. Jim has been a member of AIHA for nearly 30 years and ASSP for 25 years. In 2023 Jim was part of the small business review process and was a Small Entity Representative during the SBREFA Panel for the proposed Heat Illness and Injury Prevention standard. He co-wrote the Truck Trailer Manufacturers Association comments on the proposed standard as well as his company’s response. In 2025 he testified during the OSHA’s informal hearings for the proposed HIIP Rule. He currently is serving as the Region V Vice President and Deputy Vice Chair for CORA. Jim has served as the Area 2 Director for Region V, Deputy Regional Vice President and various roles in the Great Plains Chapter including President.

CIL ASSP 2026-2027 Chapter Elections Notice!!
The following slate of officers has been presented and approved by the nominating committee for the 2026-2027 Elections. The election was planned to be held at our PDC Event on April 14, 2026 at the ISU Alumni Center in Normal, IL. We did not have a quorum of members at the PDC so we are holding the elections during the May 15, 2026 virtual chapter meeting.
This slate of officers is being presented to the membership at least 30 days prior to the election, as required by our Bylaws.

Chapter Members may submit a signed petition nominating one or more individuals for elective office. The petition will require 10 signatures to be valid. The petition shall be accompanied by a written acceptance by the nominee(s) and shall be submitted to the Chairperson (Matt Kubsch) of the Nominations and Elections Committee 15 days in advance of the election. The names and qualifications of such nominees shall be published and distributed to the membership at least 7 days prior to the election.
